Connecting More Than One Television to Your Cable

Television has been the center of entertainment in American homes for nearly 70 years. Although the technology has changed from antennas to cable to internet streaming, people still love to watch TV. In fact, many homes have more than one set. To watch on an alternate television, say in your bedroom, you could have your provider connect your other set to a box. That would give you all the channels your main TV has access to but would be expensive. If you’re happy with just basic channels, you can connect your other TV yourself.

How to Do It

To do it, you need a piece of coaxial cable long enough to reach from your main set to the backup and a shorter piece for the main TV. You will also need to send the signal to both places. This is what rf splitters are for. They are small, metallic boxes with an input on one end and two outputs on the other.

You simply attach the cable that comes into your home from the outside to the end of the splitter with one input. Coaxials are easy to hook up. The wire slides into the hole and then you screw the outside down. Then, connect the shorter of your new pieces of cable from one output to your main television box. The longer piece goes from the other output to the back of your other TV. It’s that simple.

Stay Safe

Cables can be tripping hazards so take some time to secure your long one. You can staple it to moldings and over the tops of doors or drill a hole in a wall or floor. Drilling is tricky and could cause problems so the stapling method is better.

If you’ve got cable TV and you’d like to get the basic channels on another set, you can connect it yourself with a few parts and a little time.
